When You Are Old
When you are old and gray and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing...

On the Third Anniversary of the Ongoing War in...
by Sam Hamill a letter to Hayden Carruth It’s been nearly forty years since you wrote that poem about writing poems against all those wars, Harlan County to Italy and Spain. When your Selected Poems arrived today, it was one of the poems that gave me pause reading it again. We’ve been at war ever since. I too, born in World War, have lived and written against that particular stupidity...
A most excellent Rube Goldberg machine. Thanks to Fromm.

The Chronicle of Higher Education held a contest for readers to design the George W. Bush Presidential Library …on the back of an envelope. The response was interesting.

“Five weeks later, theoretically with a clean bill of health, in terms of the chemicals that were coursing through my body, I suffered a serious mental collapse, most likely from the way I had taken myself off my prescribed antidepressants. So I found myself in the emergency room two days in a row thinking that I was dying, suffering extreme panic and anxiety, without any sort of dissipation...

Salvation at hand: a convergence
I frequently visit McSweeney’s, the online vestiges of the progressive little-guy publishing house by the same name. I’ve been fascinated with Lawrence Weschler’s convergences concept, or, as he calls it, “an unlikely, striking pair of images” that evokes some kind of profound reaction. In a preview of his book, Everything that Rises: A Book of Convergences, Simon...

Retrievr →
Following in the fine tradition of ending the names of Web 2.0 tools with -r instead of -er, Retrievr is a super-cool visual search engine for Flickr images. Simply sketch in (approximately) what you’re looking for and Retrievr will find something that kinda looks like it. I can’t wait for this to grow more sophisticated.
Google Trends
Google Trends is pretty neat. Here I’m comparing the search trends of a popular Christmas present (iPods-in the blue line) with a popular summer activity (camping-in the red line). Notice the peaks. Awesome.

Cliché Family in TelevisionlandCourtesy of the Internet Archive: “This outrageous parody of the prototype ‘commercial’ family was apparently made as an in-house joke by one of the largest producers of television commercials. Their clients would have never seen this gem, which parodies products as well as the people that buy them.”

“The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public.” Very cool site. Definitely check out the Wayback Machine and the archive of live music.
